Will Search System

If you are not sure whether a deceased has left a will, you will need to check for the presence of a notarized will. Is there a way to find out if a deceased has made a notarized will before he/she passed away?
In this column, I would like to explain how to search for a notarize will.

Notarized Will Search System

Japan National Notaries Association has established a system for managing information about wills, and handles information about notarized wills, including names of notary officers who notarized the wills, names of testators (will makers), and dates of creation. At notary offices nationwide, you can use this system for free to search for the existence of a notarized will and the notary public office where it is kept.

How to search and what documents are required, etc.

However, not everyone is qualified to make a request to search for a will.
In order to maintain confidentiality, only interested parties such as heirs can make a request to the notary office to search for a notarized will.
In general, following documents are required when making a request.
1) Documents proving the fact that the testator has died (e.g. a copy of the family register)
2) A copy of the family register proving that the applicant is an heir of the testator
3) Documents for verifying the identity of the applicant

In addition, before the testators’ death, only the testators themselves can apply for notarized wills search.
